Kentucky — I always miss it a little more this time of year. Every time the Derby rolls around I can’t help but wish I was in the stands of Churchill Downs, wearing an obnoxiously oversized hat, sipping a mint julep screaming, “Go, baby, go!”
While I won’t be in the stands this year, I do plan on honoring “my old Kentucky home” with a homemade mint julep (or two!) My recipe of choice comes from Derby city’s very own Finn’s Southern Kitchen. Finn’s puts a fresh twist on a classic cocktail by adding strawberry to their recipe. It’s dangerously delicious.
I’ve outline the recipe below. Give it a try and let me know what you think! And if you’re ever in the Louisville area, stop by Finn’s Southern Kitchen for a savory southern meal and refreshing mint julep!
- muddled mint leaves
- 1/2 ounce of strawberry syrup
- 2 ounces of your favorite Kentucky bourbon
- crushed ice
- fresh mint for garnish
Directions: Combine all of the ingredients in a cocktail shaker and get to shakin’! Pour into mint julep cups (over extra ice if needed), garnish with fresh mint, and enjoy!
