I watch the sun come up over New York City out of the airplane window. You can see the humidity hanging in the morning light. I’ve been awake the entire flight — the butterflies won’t let me sleep. New York is familiar, but Fashion Week? This is a first. As we drive into town I can’t help but notice the difference in east coast street style. Your everyday patron, pushing the fashion envelope, strutting down the catwalk, err, crosswalk on their way to work. But that’s just New York, always here to remind you it’s a step ahead of the rest.
We stop at a local shop to refuel on coffee and hit the pavement to explore. It’s our “free day” — the calm before the storm. After a day of exploring, we meet a dear friend for dinner at Marc Forgione. I imagine this is what everyday life is like in New York City. Dining al fresco, sipping champagne, enjoying the nighttime breeze and each other’s company.
It’s now the following morning. I poke my head through the curtains, in awe of yet another colorful east coast sunrise. After a cup of coffee Neema and I get ready and head to our first show. This is so surreal. As we approach the venue, I hear the rapid fire of cameras, the sound getting closer and closer. Before I can fix my hair a photographer grabs my arm, twirls me out into the street, directing me to pose. Two…five…now ten plus photographers are taking my photo. What world am I in? Also, which celebrity do they have me confused with?
After my 15
minutes seconds in the spotlight, we make our way into the show. The runway is lined with media and familiar faces from Instagram. We take a seat as the room fades to black. The base of the music begins and the white lights turn on.
It’s show time…
As you can imagine the heat and humidity were not exactly conducive to fall fashion. Nevertheless, I managed to get away with two of my favorite fall trends — embellished collars and blush. This top with floral collar detailing offers the fun embellishment factor, without breaking the bank.
Got all day? Then pull up a seat and let me tell you all about these pleated, high-waist trousers. They’re the prettiest punch of pink and can easily be worn with a simple tee or chunky knit sweater for cooler days. Shop this look and similar options below!

It was incredibly inspiring to witness designers, new and well-known, present their collections. I can only imagine the rush they feel watching their life’s work walk down a runway. Our first show highlighted up-and-coming designers from the Down Under. Australian collections are making a big splash in the US fashion scene and after this display, I can see why.
SABO LUXE // The stylish sisters of SABO LUXE lived up to their name. With bell sleeve accents and velvet dresses, SABO did an excellent job carrying over fall trends into their Spring 2017 collection. Silk silhouettes were also a major theme. These ladies are all about the “luxe” textures and I can’t get enough.
SARA BAILES // Another favorite designer, Sara’s collection was chalk full of classic pieces with a pop of pattern. Transitional spring sweaters, off the shoulder tops, and floral prints were the highlights for me.
ALPHABE THE LABEL // The ladies are all about the feminine details with an edgy flare. Layered lace, pleats on pleats, and unique lines — their pieces are truly one of a kind.
ETE SWIMWEAR // This collection had me wishing summer wasn’t slipping away. My absolute favorite trend looking at Ete’s spring swimwear was the belted swimsuit. Loved the retro feel of the 1960’s.
Stay tuned for New York Fashion Week | Part 2!
