It was July 4th, 2014 in Saratoga, California.
The skies were blue and the sun was shining, it was a beautiful day for a wedding.
I peaked out behind the vines at all of the guests, slowly making their way to their seats, mint water and folding fans in hand. They looked stunning. It was a formal affair and everyone rose to the occasion.
The music started.
The wedding party sashayed their way down the aisle and I could feel the emotion swell in my throat. Canon D begins to play.
It’s my turn.
My dad pulls me close and I can feel him trembling. I’m not sure which one of us was more nervous. Most likely him since my mom and I had a celebratory tequila shot prior to the ceremony.
As I make my way down the aisle I do my best to soak in all of the familiar faces in the crowd. But there’s only one face that matters in this moment — Neema’s. He’s smiling, trying to hold back the tears. All hope of preserving my make-up has vanished. He grabs my hand and we begin.
The ceremony itself was full of laughter and joyful tears. As soon as we kissed Sinatra’s, “I’ve Got the World On a String” began to play. Commencing the party and our life together as husband and wife.
We were to make our grand entrance onto the veranda after cocktail hour while dancing to traditional Iranian music. Standing behind the scenes we heard the sounds of our loved ones laughing and the start of the music. Neema and I suddenly became nervous.
We were about to dance in front of 150 of our closest friends and family. This is the start of the rest of the night.
In the final moment before making our big appearance, Neema and I cheers’d, downed our champagne, and threw our hands in the air. It was time to put forth the best Persian dance moves we knew.
When we stepped out on that veranda we were blown away. A circle of family and friends formed around us and I don’t know if it was the chanting and cheering or the last swig of champagne that did it, but we were on a high.
High on the fresh open air.
High on the warmth and support we felt from our guests.
High on love.
